Description:

Northern Europe, Poland, Early Pliocene to Early Holocene, ca. 5 million years ago to 5000 years ago. A fine large fossilized example of a mammoth tooth. The original chemicals of the teeth have been replaced in the fossilization process with quartz (silica) and other minerals, creating a rich, deep brown color. The exposed interior of one tooth shows it to be mottled creamy and black colors. Mammoth teeth were highly specialized, some of the largest grinding teeth in the animal kingdom, adapted to crush woody vegetable matter in ancient forests. Size: 10.85" L x 3.5" W x 5.5" H (27.6 cm x 8.9 cm x 14 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
