Description:

Northern Italy, Etruria, ca. 5th century BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery oinochoe with a flat base, an apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a cylindrical neck, and a bifurcated handle. Surmounting the neck is a trefoil-style pouring spout that facilitated the dispensing of the liquid held within. Registers of downward-facing triangles, concentric horizontal stripes, and groupings of zigzagging stripes are presented in red-orange pigment atop the creamy yellow body and create a dazzling presentation. Size: 6" W x 8.5" H (15.2 cm x 21.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Greenwich Auctions, Stamford, Connecticut, USA; ex-private collection of an Italian family that immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century
