Classical World, Etruria (Italy), ca. late 7th to 6th century BCE. A charming wheel-thrown blackware oinochoe (also oenochoe, a pouring vessel) with a nicely delineated foot, a pleasantly rotund body, and a short cylindrical neck that rises to a carefully modeled trefoil spout, and a vertical loop handle joining rim to shoulder. The exterior walls of the voluminous body are covered in a lustrous jet-black finish. Bucchero is a specifically Etruscan technique for firing pottery which results in a smooth, shiny black finish. This type of jug may have been made specifically to be buried with offerings, as was often the case for such fine Etruscan pottery. Size: 6.1" W x 9.4" H (15.5 cm x 23.9 cm)
