Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Dine (Navajo), ca. 1900s to early 1930s CE. This large handwoven area rug features natural shades of brown, black, white, and gray, with a border of cactus stalks framing three central diamonds outlined with feather motifs. Within the diamonds are crosses and a whirling log (swastika) symbol. The Spider Woman Cross, a prominent symbol in Navajo weaving, serves as a reminder of Spider Woman - a central figure in Navajo mythology and the originator of weaving techniques. The whirling log symbol represents well-being, good luck, and protection among Southwestern tribes, but was largely discontinued after 1940 in response to its association with the Nazi regime. This rug likely predates World War II and was woven using a traditional Navajo technique known as "section lines" or "lazy lines." This technique, characterized by weaving in sections and connecting them together, creates the distinctive diagonal joins visible in this rug. Size: 91.5" L x 54.5" W (232.4 cm x 138.4 cm)
