Description:

Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Dong Son, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. A very fine example of a classic Dong Son artifact. This is a cast bronze bell, spherical, with a slit-like opening to release sound on its lower side. A long, flaring, cylindrical bronze handle is on the opposite side of the slit, which was probably once hollow for suspension but is now fully encrusted. A stylized bull's head, a common symbol of agricultural wealth and virility, is applied to one side just below the handle. The surface of the bell is covered with low relief triangles, curved lines, and spirals. Size: 3.35" W x 3.7" H (8.5 cm x 9.4 cm)

The Dong Son (also Dongson) culture thrived in northern Vietnam and its burials, rich in bronze goods, demonstrate a high level of wealth relative to neighboring areas. Many of the objects that we know about came from burials. Bells like this came in all sizes, up to almost two feet tall!
