Lot 13
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Daunia, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A stunning Daunian pottery krater with a large rounded body, a broad funnel rim, and twin upraised loop handles, all upon a flared pedestal foot. This entire form is covered with hand-painted linear bands and abstract geometric motifs in hues of black and red on a creamy beige ground. As early as the 6th century BCE, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region as is evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centers of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia among others. Daunian pottery while somewhat more rustic compared to black glazed and red figure South Italic Greek pottery is characterized by voluminous rounded forms with striking geometric and linear patterns in earthen tones as we see in this intriguing example. Size: 11.5" W x 11.875" H (29.2 cm x 30.2 cm)
