Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Daunian, ca. 350 BCE. An elegant and elaborately decorated handbuilt terracotta funerary vessel with a broad funnel rim, twin vertical ring handles alternating with twin vertical lug handles. The abstract geometric designs arranged in registers and panels were finely painted in red and brown umber pigments. Daunian pottery was a fiercely independent regional style, maintaining its rounded forms with geometric and linear painted decoration in earthen tones, despite the contemporary popularity of red-figure and black-figure Greek pottery. A suberb example of this relatively rustic yet undeniably elegant pottery in remarkable condition. Size: 8.66" W x 7.8" H (22 cm x 19.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex Victorian collection, near Essex, England
