Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A wonderful hand-built pottery instrument capable of creating multiple types of sound. The highly-burnished instrument has a spherical body decorated with intersecting red stripes atop the beige-hued body, with a rectangular mouth piece housing a tone hole below, and a quartet of finger holes to change the pitch of the sound. Inside is a small pottery ball which creates a rattle sound when jostled. A pair of avian heads project from above and below their mutual body. Size: 3.25" W x 5.2" H (8.3 cm x 13.2 cm).

  • Condition: Repair to beak of one bird head with small chips and light adhesive residue along break line. Minor abrasions to body, heads, and mouth piece, with fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout. Ocarina produces wonderful notes when played.
