Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of a rotund form bearing intricate red and black motifs atop a cream ground. The round-bottomed vessel has a sloped shoulder bearing four bulging limbs that course towards an abstract zoomorphic countenance. The upper shoulder and rim base are surrounded by red curvilinear bands outlined in black, and the flared rim is accentuated with a solid red ring. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only.   • Condition: Repairs to small areas of rim, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor abrasions to base, body, and rim, with fading and chipping to original pigmentation, minor pitting to vessel body, and light encrustations. Nice remains of original pigment throughout.
