Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished redware pottery vessel with a round but stable base, a discoid body with a dramatic carination, a sloping shoulder, a squat neck, and a flared rim. The vessel is adorned with deep vermilion-hued slip across the exterior surfaces as well as the interior of the rim, and scattered abraded areas reveal the natural buffware beneath. Size: 12.125" W x 5.8" H (30.8 cm x 14.7 cm).

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks to rim, body, and base, with one small area of fire-darkening on base, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label beneath base.
