Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. This large wood architectural panel features a scholar or Taoist Immortal figure, accompanied by a boy attendant, intricately carved from a substantial slab of burl hardwood. The natural undulations and knobs of the slightly curving burl slab are beautifully integrated into the carving, forming the scholar's garment and the top of his curled hat. The bearded scholar gazes slightly upward with a pleasing expression while holding a scroll in his hands. At his side, his young attendant looks up with a charming smile. Naturalistic burl carvings boast a long and esteemed history in China; however, it is rare to encounter an older one of this size! Size: 17" L x 7" W x 41" H (43.2 cm x 17.8 cm x 104.1 cm)
