East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Machang phase of the Majiayao culture, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. A beautiful and impressively large bi-chrome pottery vessel, the globular body painted in black and dark red with four sweeping circular motifs enclosing checkerboard and crisscross patterns, triangular forms and a wave band below, the cylindrical neck highlighted with thick striations, a loose scalloped pattern on the slightly flared rim, and a pair of lug handles applied at mid-body. Size: 14.25" W at widest point x 16.5" H (36.2 cm x 41.9 cm)
