Description:

East Asia, China, Hongshan or Longshan culture, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 1900 BCE. A large ceremonial bi-disc, hand-carved from a single stone, the hole worked on both faces to create a slightly raised rim, and when backlit, the surface glows due to the sheerness. The full function of this discs in prehistoric times is unknown. From the Neolithic period forward, bi discs were buried with the dead, often broken or placed ceremonially on the body, usually near the stomach or chest, in high status burials. Scholars also believe that they were used during life for rituals. The level of skill and artistry required to shape hardstone speaks to how highly valued this striking piece of sacred art was. Size: 7.125" Diameter x 0.5" W (18.1 cm x 1.3 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
