Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 900 to 1400 CE. A lovely and large textile fragment made from camelid wool (alpaca or llama) with possibly cotton warps, using openwork and slit-tapestry weaving techniques. Abstract reptiles - perhaps lizards in the main register, and birds bordering the upper and lower edges near the fringes. Size of textile: 20" L x 8.5" W (50.8 cm x 21.6 cm); frame: 26" L x 13.75" W (66 cm x 34.9 cm)

Provenance: private Occidental, California, USA collection, by inheritance, collected late 1980s

  • Condition: Fragment of larger textile, and has not been examined outside of frame. Small holes and perforations, but most is intact and very good. Minor staining and fading to colors. Mounted in modern wood and glass frame.
