Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A large, thin copper disc, its surface decorated with incised motifs. At the center is a standing lord wearing a huge curved headdress. Around him is a series of identical squirrels, each standing with its legs drawn up and its tail raised over its back. Two holes at the center allowed this to be sewn onto clothing or a mummy bundle. The Chimu seem to have associated squirrels with fertility, and squirrel motifs are notable from the Tschudi Palace, part of the famous Chan Chan site, where they line a corridor near the Gran Plaza. Size: 12.75" W x 11.25" H (32.4 cm x 28.6 cm); size of glass-fronted case: 16.25" W x 12.25" H (41.3 cm x 31.1 cm)
