Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1300 CE. A finely-preserved sewing basket comprised of woven reeds with an assortment of textile weaving tools as well as two large woven fragments included. Among the tools are 32 slender wooden needles; 1 wooden needle with an attached wooden tube; 16 wooden needles with attached pottery spindle whorls; 11 wooden needles with attached spools of thread; 1 small wooden awl; 3 loose pottery spindle whorls; and 2 tufts of loose thread. Size (basket): 8.25" L x 14.5" W x 8" H (21 cm x 36.8 cm x 20.3 cm); size of largest tool (needle w/ spindle whorl): 14" L (35.6 cm).
