Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A bichrome earthenware, oversized ovoid bottle with a convex neck, a pair of arched strap handles at the midline, each with an applied figure donning a headdress above, and a roofed hut with a seated figure peeking out from within applied to one side. The vessel is skillfully painted in chocolate brown on cream ground, with a complex textile-inspired pattern on the side with the emerging edifice, and nested zigzag motifs on the other; the neck is painted dark chocolate brown and features a pair of applied zoomorphic features - perhaps representing an animal head one one side and tail on the other. A magnificent example, unusual in that it features both architectural and figural forms. Size: 18.5" H (47 cm); 19.75" H (50.2 cm) on included custom stand.
