Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. A massive mold-made figural vessel with painted and applied details on a classically egg-shaped body with a cylindrical head. Toes and fingers are applied to the frontside and the hands clasp a small cup, or kero. The head is forward facing with a slightly projecting chin, protruding nose, wide eyes, and large earspools and applied vertical ridges on the headdress. The vessel is slip painted with a lovely chocolate/plum hue on a creamy white ground to detail the arms, facial tattoos, and headdress. The wide-eyed expression and headdress suggest that this is a shaman during a religious trance. Size: 18.5" L x 9.5" W (47 cm x 24.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Dr. W.M. Bogdanowicz, Naples, Florida, USA, between 1965 and 1990
