Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A wonderful and attractive hand-built pottery vessel of a sizable form with a cream-painted, egg-shaped body. The figure's head is depicted on the neck with bulging eyes, an upturned triangular nose, enormous ear spools, and black-painted tattooing around the eyes and mouth, all beneath a crown/headdress adorned with ridged vertical appliques. The figure sits with applied, curled legs and holds a small kero (cup) in both hands. A striking example of fine Chancay artistry! Size: 11.2" W x 21.125" H (28.4 cm x 53.7 cm); 21.3" H (54.1 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Repairs to both hands, with small nicks to crown rim, and restoration to one ear spool. Minor abrasions and chips to body, neck, and headdress, with light fading to original pigmentation, light encrustations, and a couple of stable hairline fissures. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
