Description:

**Originally Listed At $700**

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes culture, Barbicora type, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of sizable, hemispherical form with a round but stable base, thick walls, and a slightly in-folded rim. The beige-hued exterior is decorated with broad red and black triangles that stretch out into linear stripes which spiral around one another. Size: 10.47" Diameter x 5.25" H (26.6 cm x 13.3 cm)

The Babicora tradition is an outgrowth of the late Viejo period painting styles. In contrast, the later Ramos style in which red paint is outlined in black appears to be an intrusive style, possibly derived from Mimbres Polychrome. Babicora was produced via the same techniques as Ramos Polychrome; however, Babicora is believed to be a precursor to Ramos Polychrome.
