Description:

Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. A massive stone mortar with a thick grinding pestle. The hefty bowl rests on a small foot, and the thick walls lend weight to the mortar which must have created great stability while in use. The exterior surface is delightfully smooth to the touch, and the interior basin is slightly indented from rigorously grinding medicine or food. Size mortar: 9.25" Diameter x 4.5" H (23.5 cm x 11.4 cm); Size pestle: 7.25" L x 2.25" W (18.4 cm x 5.7 cm)
