Description:

Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A lovely cast-bronze reliquary cross known as an "enkolpion," consisting of two crosses that fit together, a lower clasp, and an upper hinge with a large ovoid loop at the top for suspension. The obverse face displays what is probably, based on similar examples, a large central Virgin Mary flanked by a pair of smaller figures on the arms. The reverse side displays Jesus Christ with outspread arms and a tilted head surrounded by a radiating corona. The hinged opening on this one still functions, which is rare given its age. It is also quite large. This must have made quite a statement when worn! Size: 2.35" W x 4.25" H (6 cm x 10.8 cm)
