Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. An oversized ovoid bottle with a flaring neck, a pair of arched strap handles, and two endearing applique forms, perhaps baby birds hatching from eggs given that they appear upon the vertical register adorned with an egg motif pattern. The vessel is skillfully painted in chocolate brown on cream ground, with vertical stripes over the central body, an egg-like motif between two pairs of the stripes (funny, as the vessel itself is somewhat egg shaped as well), two elaborate panels on the neck adorned with an X pattern comprised of dotted mini panels with a tiny bird occupying each of the four resulting compartments. A breathtaking example perfect for springtime, as the egg is a symbol of renewal! Size: 10.5" W x 17" H (26.7 cm x 43.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Story collection, Denver, CO, acquired in 1950s.
