Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Paquime/Casas Grandes, ca. 1150 to 1450 CE. A handsome round olla with a corseted neck and slightly flared rim. The body is decorated with a very dark, early red around the exterior rim and motifs of intersecting lines, squares, and triangles in black on creamy beige around the exterior body. Motifs like these have been interpreted as being inspired by the dramatic desert geology of the southwestern landscape. Casas Grandes is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and was a hugely important intermediary - in terms of trade, art, and culture - between the empires of Mesoamerica and the Ancestral Puebloans (Anasazi) of the US Southwest. Their distinctive pottery references both of these cultural areas while being unique to their region. Size: 8" W x 7.35" H (20.3 cm x 18.7 cm)

Provenance: private Greensboro, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-private Arizona, USA collection
