Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A very large and finely decorated polychrome vessel with an elegant inverted piriform body, a tubular neck, and a flaring mouth with rolled rim. Around the shoulder is a wonderful painting of abstract mythical saurian creatures - delineated in a rich red outlined in black with quixotic maze-like "eyes" delineated in black fine line against an earthy beige ground. Above these are a thick black band followed by three slender red bands punctuated by black dots beneath. The mythical creatures shown here would have carried shamanic or spiritual importance to the ancients of the Gran Cocle culture. Size: 12.625" in diameter x 12.125" H (32.1 cm x 30.8 cm)
