Description:

Asian. Vietnam, Dong Son culture, 1st millennium BCE. A large round bronze bell adorned with a horned bull's head in high relief, a large bale and suspension loops on each side, the overall surface textured to look as if covered with cord-like fibers. A long slitted opening bordered with triangular motifs one both sides serves to emit sound. Given the surviving bronze articles from this culture, oftentimes found in elite burials, it appears that musical instruments were immensely important to these ancient peoples. In addition, bull symbolism has connoted virility, fertility, and valor since prehistoric times and has been adopted by many cultures including Dong Son over the ages. Size: 3.75" L x 3.875" W (9.5 cm x 9.8 cm)
