Description:

New World, Bolivia, millions of years old. A dramatically-shaped section of amethyst (purple quartz) from the interior lining of a large geode. The form is like a large scoop, curving outward at its lower end and presenting the deep purple stone in such a way that it catches light from all different sides. The name of this popular purple gemstone is Greek in origin and means "not drunken." Some scholars suggest that this was due to the belief that amethyst had the power to stave off the effects of alcohol; however, most believe that the Greeks were probably referring to the near wine-like hue of some amethyst stones. Size: 9.8" W x 13.5" H (24.9 cm x 34.3 cm); 21.25" H (54 cm) on included custom stand.
