Description:

South America, Brazil / Venezuela, Yanomami culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A large hand twined burden basket, possibly made from titica vine, majagua, and/or mamure plant fibers with vine handles around the rim and near the base for carrying and attaching straps. The Yanomami (Yanomama) traditionally live south of the Orinoco River, deep in the Amazon rainforest and they had little contact with outsiders until the 1950s and 1970s with the infiltration of missionaries, expanding road networks, and a wave of miners due to gold deposits discovered in the region. The UNESCO Alto Orinoco-Casiquiare Biosphere Reserve was created in 1993 to preserve the homeland of the Yanomami and Ye'kuana people. Size: 17" Diameter x 15" H (43.2 cm x 38.1 cm)
