Description:

South Africa, Eastern Angola / Western Zambia, Mbunda / Lozi culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large hand woven makenge basket, made from coiled rods and roots from the makenge bush, a very durable material that withstands heavy use! The lighter colored patches are made from raised bundles of corn husks stitched over the makenge to cover any holes that occur and to beautify the weaving. The baskets are used for daily life tasks such as winnowing grains, harvesting, and storage. They are traditionally woven by women and handed down through the generations from mother to daughter, often gifted to the bride on her wedding day as a precious and useful heirloom.
