East Africa, Ethiopia, Harari culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A large, coiled basket made from dyed grasses resting on a short foot, the rim of the foot and bowl edge are trimmed in leather. Leather tassels with cowrie shell appliques decorate the rim, and the splint grass fibers are dyed in bright pink-red, purple, and orange hues. Besides daily use and storage, colorful basketry is a major part of Harari culture, and woven vessels are used for dowry, special gifts, and decoration. Harari woman today often support their families by making and selling baskets - such as this example. Size: 22" Diameter x 5" H (55.9 cm x 12.7 cm)
