Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik River province, North Coast, Boiken peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful and well-preserved mask meant to be worn during dance ceremonies, hand-carved from a single piece of hardwood. The elongated mask displays a pair of ovoid eyes flanking the top of an enormous curved nose resembling an avian beak and a thin mouth below. The bulbous brow displays a gorgeous concentric circle design with large red and creamy-beige pigment, all atop a dark-grey ground. The body of a marine animal - dolphin or shark - sits on the forehead. The human/avian combination gives the piece a classically Papuan look. Size: 12.5" W x 27" H (31.8 cm x 68.6 cm)
