Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid 20th century CE. A large and lovely hand-carved wooden serving platter with densely-adorned floral decorations painted in black pigment atop a sapphire-blue hued ground. The ten-petaled blossom in the middle has a checkered circle in the center and is surrounded by striated leaves, tendril-form vines with leafy peripheries, and smaller stemmed flowers. The outer curve of the dish is embellished with a repeating register of triangular leaves with concentric circles in the middle of their bodies, and small tongue-shaped forms adorn the plateaued rim. The underside is unadorned but is painted in the same cobalt color as the topside. Size: 22" Diameter (55.9 cm).
