**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Northwestern United States / Canada, British Columbia, Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl), Haida or Tlingit, ca. 1950 to 1975 CE. A hand-carved cedar totem sculpture of a large eagle standing atop an effigy of a legendary creature known as the sisiutl with an additional face of a bear in the middle. Painted in very strong, vibrant shades of red, white, blue, teal, black and orange. The eagle is especially nicely carved with 8 rows of delineated feathers on his chest, a large crest on his head and a large, curved beak. Totems represent various strengths associated with the clan - bear meaning strength, humility and motherhood, and the sisiutl as a mediator between the physical and spiritual realms. Signed on reverse in black "Carved by Sylvester James. Clo-ose Vancouver Island, British Columbia." Size: 60.5" L x 25" H (153.7 cm x 63.5 cm)
