First Nations / Native American, Alaska or Canadian Arctic, Inuit, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A lovely statue depicting a 3-person family of a mother and 2 children, all hand-carved from gray-green soapstone. The carving depicts a striding mother - wearing mukluks, gloves, a thick jacket, and a centrally parted coiffure - as she holds one child in both hands while swaddling the other on her back. The mother's kind countenance features ovoid eyes, a tall, triangular nose, thick lips beneath rounded cheeks, and a bulky chin, and both children feature hemispherical faces with wide-eyed stares. This figure is presented atop a white marble base for stability. Size: 8.6" L x 5" W x 12.5" H (21.8 cm x 12.7 cm x 31.8 cm); 13.7" H (34.8 cm) on included custom stand.
