Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large example of a dZi bead, made from treated agate, with a dark surface and white/creamy white motifs on both of its faces. One face has a floral pattern and the other has an owl-like zoomorphic face. For non-Tibetans, genuine dZi beads are made of agate, with sharply delineated patterns, symmetrical shapes, strong color, a glossy surface, and no flaws in the design. Ethnographic interviews tell us that to Tibetans, genuine dZi beads must also be free from defilement and possess amuletic powers. Size: 2.8" W x 6.6" H (7.1 cm x 16.8 cm)

Provenance: collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA
