South America, Upper / Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Peru, Shipibo peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A splendid and sizeable pottery jar intricately hand-painted with mesmerizing linear and geometric motifs in hues of russet, cream and black. The vessel features a flared rim, a conical neck, a rounded shoulder, a dramatically wide hip, and a narrow, planar base. Russet-colored slip envelops the area above the hip, while everything above is covered in hypnotic interlocking designs, and the interior is covered in a coat of black pigment. Size: 16" Diameter x 15.2" H (40.6 cm x 38.6 cm)
