Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Philippines, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A massive bronze gong with a wide rim and a rounded knob at the top. The body tapers to a flat base. This style of gong, one of many used in traditional Filipino music, is called an agung, which produces a bass sound when played in the kulintang orchestra (a southeast Asian orchestra composed of gongs and drums). They are played by hanging them vertically above the floor at waist height and striking them with padded sticks. This example is nicely protected by a woven fiber carrying case with a thick shoulder strap. Size: 24.5" W x 12.5" H (62.2 cm x 31.8 cm)
