Western Europe, Spain, ca. 18th century CE. A child sized santos figure of a young woman seated, her arms bent inward, but her wrists are jointed and articulate freely. This is perhaps a representation of the Virgin Mary or another saint in a highly naturalistic mannequin style. Her upper torso and legs are painted a beige-white and carved shoes form the feet. Her sweet visage has a pink blush, dark eyes, thin brows, and bowed lips held in a gentle smile. Originally, she had a wig that could have been made into an elegant coiffure, and small remains of hair fibers clings to the surface. The area left unpainted would have been completely clothed, included is a pink satin dress with a red lacing - an antique garment that perhaps dates to the 19th to early 20th century. Modest santos are carved with clothing incorporated into the body, but important santos are usually nude and must be dressed in separate clothing that was often gifted to the santos by devotional patrons - their wardrobes could be quite elaborate! This Madonna has lovely naturalistic qualities that are often hidden when clothed - shapely shins and knees, fingernails, and petite breasts! Santos played an important role in bringing the Catholic Church to the New World with the Spanish colonists. These religious figures were hand-carved icons to explain the major figures - Mary, Christ, and the saints - to new, indigenous converts. Likewise, they served as a connection to the Old World for Spanish colonists far from home. Many of them were lovingly cared for over the years, with repairs and paint added as they aged, and played an active part for a long time in the religious life of their communities. Oftentimes regarded as quite valuable and expensive, the creation of Santos was usually funded by religious devotees or by the upper class for their private chapels.

- Condition: Losses to fingers and repairs to legs. Chipping and fading to pigments. Stable fissures throughout. Old inactive insect holes throughout. Dress is likely 19th to 20th century with staining, tears, rips, and slight odor. Overall good condition with a wonderful patina and facial expression.
