Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 18th century CE. A serene cast-brass sculpture of the Buddha seated in a full lotus upon a pedestal. The hollow statue is adorned with flowing kasaya robes that cover his right shoulder and drape naturalistically over his legs. His hands gesture the “earth witness” or bhumisparsa mudra of enlightenment; one hand reaches for the ground, and other hand is placed upwards and open in his lap. This Buddha's face is characteristically calm and gentle, with narrow eyes cast downwards, smiling lips, and elongated ears that extend to his shoulders symbolizing Buddha's all hearing powers. His hair is curled into tight nodules and gathered in a topknot coiffure. This is a beautiful rendering of the Buddha just as he reaches enlightenment! Size: 14" W x 17.5" H (35.6 cm x 44.4 cm)
