Description:

Near East, Persia (Iran), ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A beautiful, rare tile depicting a scene from the Old Testament, with a Hebrew inscription painted at the top reading, "Yosef v'eishet Potifar", or, in English, "Joseph and Potiphar's Wife". The tile was probably made by a Jewish artisan, and may have been made to grace a synagogue. The artwork is a fine blend of Persian style - the black outlines around the colored sections, the floral patterning and architectural features in the background, and the way in which human faces have been drawn - with the Jewish theme of the story. Size: 9.5" W x 14" H (24.1 cm x 35.6 cm)

The story of Joseph and Potiphar's Wife comes from the Book of Genesis, and inspired artists, especially during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. During the period that Joseph was a slave in Egypt, he was sold to a man named Potiphar. Potiphar's wife, who is unnamed, attempts to seduce Joseph, and when he turns down her advances, she falsely accuses him of attempting rape. Potiphar sends Joseph to prison, and it is there that his ability to interpret the dreams of other prisoners brings him to the attention of the Pharaoh. This tile follows the common Renaissance style of portraying the moment Joseph flees from Potiphar's wife's advances.
