Description:

Medieval Near East, Holy Land, Islamic, ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A sizable ring, cast from bronze via the lost wax technique, that depicts a highly abstract avian creature incised atop the face. The thick shank narrows slightly along the bottom and flares outwards to create the shoulders. Exhibited on the face is the perplexing bird with a lobed body atop slender legs, a slender neck that cranes dramatically over the back, and an open beak in front of the head. Surrounding the creature are five petite circular adornments, and the entire ring is covered in smooth patina. Size (ring): 1.3" W x 1.4" H (3.3 cm x 3.6 cm); (face): 1.2" Diameter (3 cm); US ring size 12.
