Description:

Northern Peru, Pre-Columbian, Ca 800 to 1200 CE. Not only extremely artistic, but of great historical interest, as well, clearly showing the construction methods and propulsion techniques for early watercraft from this region. Brownware pottery vessel shows a kneeling oarsman sitting atop of raft of bound fibers, another figure is clinging onto the back of the vessel - indicating he may be a diver or fisherman. Vessel incorporates a whistle into the oarsman's back producing a lovely tone when either blown into or when liquid is poured from the piece. 8-1/2"L x 6-1/2"H. Provenance: Ex-private San Francisco, CA collection, ex-Splendors of the World, HI. The starting price is the lowest price at which the piece can sell.
