Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A paper-thin hammered gold applique, cut into the form of an avian head with a short, open beak and a large crest. Six small perforations along the lower border and one at the top would have been used to attach this item to clothing. Sican elites were patrons of workshops that made fine metal objects like this one, and they took their wealth with them when they died. Buried in mounds, they would be entombed in high style. Size: 2.2" W x 2.3" H (5.6 cm x 5.8 cm); 3.9 grams
