Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1370 CE. This is a black ware stirrup vessel with a short spout, a squared-off body, and a flared, geometrically decorated foot with temple designs. All of this information is not as eye-catching as the three-dimensional decoration on the body, which depicts two oval-faced people in what appears to be the act of fellatio; one lies prone atop two square mats, one arm flung out to the side, obviously erect, while the other hunches over, hands and mouth touching the phallus. The figure performing the act of fellatio is large and, although the features are shaped as if it is a human, has uncanny features that suggest a more supernatural status. Although erotic art is a relatively common theme in neighboring Moche art, it is much less common from the Lambayeque. These were a people who did not shy from displaying their wealth; the elite wore tunics covered in panels of gold and tombs were stuffed full of beautiful and precious artwork. Their sculpture did not depict quotidian activities; instead, it was mostly confined to supernatural beings and events, warfare and the glory of warriors, animals, and, sometimes, sexual acts. For the Moche, almost all of the known erotic pottery came from graves, where they had been placed as offerings. This vessel was probably made for the same reason, and was probably placed in someone's tomb -- but for what purpose? That is lost to the mysterious past.
