Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Lambayeque, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An unusual bichrome whistling vessel featuring a long-beaked water bird perched at the end of a curved strap handle, atop the front of four fruit or gourd-shaped lobes below, the rear end of the handle meeting a tall conical spout which emerges from another gourd/fruit. The other pair of striated lobed fruits/gourds present applied stems. In addition to the marvelous forms and iconography are the mesmerizing surfaces, all painted with fine details: striations on the gourds/fruits, feathered wings and a black head for the bird, and elaborate abstract geometric motifs adorning the strap handle, and striated and curvilinear bands on the spout, all in black on a rosy beige ground. Size: 6.875" W x 8.25" H (17.5 cm x 21 cm)

Provenance: private New York collection; ex Don May collection, 1970's
