Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, La Tolita (sometimes Tumaco), ca. 350 BCE to 350 CE. A fine mold-formed buffware figure depicting a seated elder shaman. The shaman sits upon a small stool with bent legs and wears a knee-length garment over his body. He leans forward and holds one arm outwards with an open palm, perhaps as a gesture of offering or explanation towards a larger group of individuals. His countenance is comprised of almond-shaped eyes, a bulbous nose, a rounded chin with nicely contoured cheeks, large ears with applied ear spools, and full lips curved into a slight smile, all beneath a large headdress with a thick brim and a conical central protrusion. Size: 3.875" W x 6.75" H (9.8 cm x 17.1 cm).
