**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, La Tolita culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. A finely molded greyware pottery head of an elder dignitary or tribal leader known as a cacique. The head displays coffee-bean-shaped eyes within recessed sockets as well as deep nasolabial folds, a plump nose, and incised wrinkles across the cheeks and brow. The caciques of the La Tolita peoples were responsible for the welfare of their communities. They received gold and textiles as charitable donations for his mobilization of labor forces for building projects and agricultural maintenance. The caciques lived in large, enclosed residential compounds and paid their laborers in textiles and maize beer. Size: 3.2" W x 3.5" H (8.1 cm x 8.9 cm)
