Description:

East Asia, Korea, Silla Kingdom, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A delightful greyware representation of a horse, shown standing with its legs slightly splayed out and its head erect on a powerful neck. This is a tou, a clay doll made specifically to be put into a grave so that the deceased could have a horse with them in the next world. Silla-period elites took great pride in their horse riding and in the connection the animals drew to the people of the steppes. This horse has a hollow opening in its back haunches, perhaps for inserting something such as a separate riding figure. Size: 5.75" W x 5.2" H (14.6 cm x 13.2 cm)

Provenance: Estate of William Stockton, Colorado, USA; acquired between July 20, 1966 and January 7, 1974 while Mr. Stockton was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During this period he traveled primarily to Korea, but also to Japan, Vietnam, and other countries in Southeast Asia.
