East Asia, South Korea, Goryeo/Koryo Dynasty, ca. 918 to 1392 CE. A cast-leaded bronze mirror with a polished face and a petite, knobbed handle. The verso of the mirror features a rectangle bearing Korean characters in low relief. Bronze mirrors that were polished on one side and decorated on the reverse were a popular luxury item coveted throughout East Asia. While they originated in China during the early years of China's development of bronze technology, circa 1700 BCE or possibly earlier, the taste for such mirrors spread beyond China's borders to Korea and Japan.
