Central Asia, Indo-Greek kingdom, Bactria, Menander, ca. 165/55 to 130 BCE. AR tetradrachm (9.4 g). On the obverse, helmeted bust of king right, Greek legend around. On the reverse, Athena Alkidemos standing left, holding aegis on outstretched left arm, hurling thunderbolt with right hand, monogram at right, Kharoshthi legend around. MIG 217f, Bop 15B, SNG ANS 850-53. Size: 1.05" W (2.7 cm)

Menander I Soter ("Menander I the Savior") was king of the Indo-Greek Kingdom who established a large empire in the northwestern region of South Asia and who was a great patron of Buddhism. The Greek geographer Strabo wrote that he "conquered more tribes than Alexander the Great" and many of his coins have been found, attesting to the flourishing economy he oversaw.
